My focus for several years has been to portray the ordinary in a noble light. Tools, household objects, storefronts, abandoned churches, working-class people - all are sources for portraiture in the broader sense. Once selected, each subject presents me with the challenges of composition, spatial relationships, color interaction and the qualities of shape and edge. These formal elements become the personal language and history of the subject, allowing its story to be told without words. Underlying that story is the connectedness we feel for it, how it is a part of our individual stories as well. In the end I hope to convey my respect for the objects or persons I’ve painted.
